\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAddressing the growing need for environmental awareness in an international humanities\u00a0\ncurriculum, this special topics course GER 316 is cross-listed with ENG 389 and IDS 385 and\u00a0\nintroduces students to environmental issues in both North American and German literature and\u00a0\nfilm. It offers an interdisciplinary investigation into the functioning of the natural world in both\u00a0\nEnglish and (translated) German cultural documents to provide a critical and historical\u00a0\nunderstanding of current debates on climate change, pollution, urban development, and other\u00a0\nforms of nature-culture interactions. We will explore how writers have understood and written\u00a0\nabout their environments historically, and how these depictions of nature have come to\u00a0\ninfluence current attitudes and understandings of the non-human world.\u00a0\n

\nAs global warming expands to projections ranging from two to four degrees Celsius or more by\u00a0\nthe year 2050, one forecast is certain. We are beginning to live in a fundamentally changed\u00a0\nworld, a volatile and unknown environment we can neither control nor predict. If humankind,\u00a0\nas a geological force, has brought about a new climate regime along with other planetary\u00a0\nchanges that characterize a new geological epoch – the Anthropocene – then the humanities\u00a0\nmust address this global environmental crisis. This course critically assesses the narrative\u00a0\ntraditions that have accompanied, explained, and challenged our lives in the Anthropocene. It\u00a0\nwill familiarize students with current debates in the environmental humanities, especially\u00a0\nconcerning the Anthropocene, and investigate particular texts documenting climate change,\u00a0\nfrom early ecological thought to political critiques, from dystopian fiction to climate thrillers,\u00a0\nfrom the creative arts to disaster films.\u00a0\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
