Liebe, <\/span>Krankheit<\/span>, Tod<\/span><\/span><\/em> analyzes literary and filmic representations of illness, pandemics, and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>death that have <\/span>acquired<\/span> renewed interest recently. The historical focus lies on the late<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>nineteenth and early twentieth century, when writers and directors artistically <\/span>rendered<\/span> related<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>events and experiences such as Germany\u2019s defeat in World War I, economic collapse, political<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>upheaval, right-wing <\/span>radicalization<\/span> and militarization, growing <\/span>anti-Semitism<\/span> and racism, the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic, and fears of modernity, sexuality, and liberation. Considering<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>poems, prose texts, visual art, and films we trace historical and cultural developments and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>artistic expansions. The course concludes with a contemporary graphic novel that revisits some<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
