This course offers an introduction to the ideas and issues that constitute the interdisciplinary field<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>of sustainability. Sustainability posits social equity, environmental integrity, and economic<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>prosperity as desirable goals while recognizing that these goals may be in competition with each<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>other. Recently, the viability of sustainability <\/span>as a whole has<\/span> been questioned, and alternative<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>models have been proposed. Through the examination of general themes and specific case<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>studies, we will connect readings and films with contemporary national and international<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>environmental challenges across the social and natural sciences, the humanities, and business<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>both on a local and global scale. We will also hear from Emory faculty and staff who embrace<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>diverse visions of sustainability in their work. In short, this course addresses the questions of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>what are the promises, parameters, and challenges of sustainability in the current century, and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
